December Garden Chores For 2012

Ilona Erwin

This being an unusually mild December for Ohio, all the garden chores of November are possible in this month as long as the mild temperatures and good weather hold. Of course, Christmas preparations may not leave as much time for this window of good garden weather, but the choice is yours.

This month I did find some time to finish up the outdoor decorating, the remaining leaf raking, and made sure my pots and tools were put away.

Additionally I started reorganizing my tool pegboard and spent some time cleaning off the back porch entry (jobs that didn’t find time during an unusually busy autumn).

If you don’t have an area where your tools are well organized, maybe that could find its way to your Christmas list, if you don’t mind utilitarian, practical gifts!

Christmas Trees

If you are planning on having a living Christmas tree this year, one you can plant in the garden, remember to dig the hole while ye may. If not already done, dig before the ground freezes and the temperatures are dangerously cold.

Remember how damaging salt can be to plants, substitute sand or kitty litter as one alternative.
